After the heartbreaking loss of their mother, Torvi, to a rare medical condition, the Zoo's expert team sprung into action to provide the three tiny kittens with round-the-clock care. Conservation Efforts
Under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listed the Canada lynx as threatened in the lower 48 states. Trapping in the 19th century and present-day habitat destruction and fragmentation have caused population declines.
Today, organizations like the Minnesota Zoo are working to safeguard this species from extinction through efforts including cooperative breeding programs like Species Survival Plans (SSPs), research initiatives, and the rescue of injured or orphaned lynx.
These kittens were born as part of the Canada lynx SSP, and represent a huge conservation win for their species. SSPs are cooperative breeding programs that work to create healthy, genetically diverse populations of at-risk species in human care. Connecting With Wildlife
In July, our male lynx kitten arrived at another accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institution, where he’ll be trained as an ambassador animal. There, he’ll make important connections with people that inspire them to protect wildlife.
At the Minnesota Zoo, guests can see sisters Freya and Ingrid on habitat later this summer, where they, too, will form connections with the public and help create a brighter future for their wild counterparts.
